A Few Comments From Chicken Little

Filed under: Comic Relief — Becky @ 8:53 am

Wow! Wow! Wow!
Check out the description of a lovely little book called
The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism by Christopher C. Horner, brought to us courtesy of our friends at the conservative press:

“For decades, environmentalism has been the Left’s best excuse for increasing government control over our actions in ways both large and small. It’s for Mother Earth! It’s for the children! It’s for the whales! But until now, the doomsday-scenario environmental scares they’ve trumped up haven’t been large enough to give the sinister prize they want most of all: total control of American politics, economic activity, and even individual behavior. With global warming, however, greenhouse gasbags can argue that auto emissions in Ohio threaten people in Paris, and that only global government can tackle such problems. National sovereignty? Democracy? Forget it: global warming has now brought the Left closer to global government, statism, and the eradication of individual rights than it has ever been before.

Now… Christopher C. Horner tears the cover off the Left’s manipulation of environmental issues for political purposes — and lays out incontrovertible evidence for the fact that catastrophic man-made global warming is just more Chicken-Little hysteria, not actual science.”

Chicken Little would like to tell Christopher Horner that he is not paying attention to the news. There happen to be many out of control wild fires raging across the country. There are hurricanes and heatwave, and glaciers melting with ice sheets twice the size of England dropping into the ocean. Global Warming is real and it is here now and his book is a doing a huge disfavor to our mother earth, the children and the whales.

And, I guess when it comes right down to it, I’d rather be Chicken Little than Oscar the Ostrich.

Air Conditioner Discovery

Filed under: Conserving Energy Around the House (Steve) — admin @ 10:49 pm

Since we have a digital energy meter on the side of our home (due to solar installation) I can tell exactly how much energy we are using at any moment. During the recent heat wave, a friend of mine suggested that if necessary I run our air conditioner in the early afternoon - during the peak generation time for our solar system - so that the air conditioner would be running guilt-free from the Sun’s energy. I thought “Hey, that’s a good idea.” That made me curious about how much electricity our central AC actually uses and whether our solar system could handle it along with the rest of load from our home. So, first I checked our PG&E meter without the AC on and it showed that we were producing 2300 watts and using about 1000 of it. Then I had my wife turn on the AC and checked again. Holy Cow! Our total energy use had jumped to 5600 watts! Just one of our two central air units was sucking about 4600 watts - the equivalent of having 46 100 watt light bulbs on. At that moment we’d need 36 solar panels just to handle one of our two central air units. To put it mildly I was blown away. I never realized what a drain air conditioning is.
